Phi Ta Khon Ceremony In Thailand




Phi Ta Khon is also recognized as the Ghost Festival of Thailand. The Ghost Festival is held each and every year and it can be either held in Could possibly, June or July. The festival is a 3 day merit producing festival, throughout which individuals dress up like ghosts wearing masks and elaborate costumes.


This festival has ancient roots and is celebrated to appease the dead. The story goes that Lord Buddha's reincarnated form was a king who decided to go on a lengthy trip. He was away for so long that many people forgot about him or presumed he was dead. Yet, the king returned and the subjects had been rather happy to see him alive. To celebrate the safe return of their king, the subjects started singing and dancing. The celebrations were so loud that it woke up the dead who joined in the enjoyable and frolic.


Having said that, the Ghost Festival is a harvest festival and it is celebrated to evoke rains so that the farmers have a good harvest.


In the course of this festival, many people dress themselves as ghosts wearing masks and costumes. They are accompanied by substantial number of people today playing different musical instruments. The mask wearers dance to the music and the procession's ultimate destination is the village temple. On reaching the temple, the mask wearers reveal themselves by taking off their masks. Then the whole procession sits and listens to the thirteen sermons of Lord Buddha which are recited by the temple monks.


Once the religious aspect of the festival it over, the fun and games begin. People today participate in various contests and also win prizes for greatest masks and best costumes. At the end of the third day of the festival, all fun and games come to an end and the villagers begin preparing to work the following day. In the course of these 3 days of festivities, life in the village comes to a standstill.
